Cryptic genetic variation

چکیده
What is cryptic genetic variation? Cryptic genetic variation refers to unexpressed, bottled-up genetic potential. It is not normally seen, but is expressed under abnormal conditions such as in a new environment or a different genetic background. In a sense, the measurable component of normal variation is just the tip of an iceberg of genetic possibilities that are hidden below the visible surface.

Cryptic genetic variation in natural populations: a predictive framework.
Understanding how populations respond to rapid environmental change is critical both for preserving biodiversity and for human health. An increasing number of studies have shown that genetic variation that has no discernable effect under common ecological conditions can become amplified under stressful or novel conditions, suggesting that environmental change per se can provide the raw material...
متن کاملAge-structured genetic analysis reveals temporal and geographic variation within and between two cryptic rockfish species
The spatial patterns of genetic structure among juveniles of long-lived species can reveal the extent of interannual and geographic variation in realized larval dispersal as well as the processes that determine ecologically relevant patterns of population connectivity. However, few studies examine this temporal and spatial variation over large portions of a species’ geographic range or between ...
متن کاملCryptic genetic variation is enriched for potential adaptations.
Cryptic genetic variation accumulates under weakened selection and has been proposed as a source of evolutionary innovations. Weakened selection may, however, also lead to the accumulation of strongly deleterious or lethal alleles, swamping the effect of any potentially adaptive alleles when they are revealed. Here I model variation that is partially shielded from selection, assuming that uncon...
متن کاملDiet and hormonal manipulation reveal cryptic genetic variation: implications for the evolution of novel feeding strategies.
When experiencing resource competition or abrupt environmental change, animals often must transition rapidly from an ancestral diet to a novel, derived diet. Yet, little is known about the proximate mechanisms that mediate such rapid evolutionary transitions. Here, we investigated the role of diet-induced, cryptic genetic variation in facilitating the evolution of novel resource-use traits that...

or as the network of interactions among genes that constrain the phenotype at an optimum, hiding the underlying genetic variation from natural selection. Cryptic genetic variation can also be uncovered without de-canalization: Any change that shifts the phenotype mean can potentially change the architecture of the trait. Why haven't I heard more about cryptic genetic variation if it so prevalen...
